This week, I’m writing from the sky on my way home from the Breeder’s Cup. It was a work trip, but I managed to squeeze in a bit of fun too. Travel always throws me off a bit—my schedule gets out of sync, I end up eating food I’m not used to, and let’s just say that packing is not my strong suit. I never seem to get it right, and I’m notorious for waiting until the last minute, usually packing in a frenzy the night before or even the morning of my flight.
But the real challenge of traveling? Coming home to a house that’s been sitting empty for days. There’s nothing worse than walking in the door and immediately smelling…something. Maybe it’s the trash you forgot to take out after cooking salmon, or it’s a neglected plant that didn’t survive the wait.
But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be like that. Imagine coming home to a space that’s perfectly prepared for your arrival. The trash is empty, the beds are made, and your favorite flowers (mine are lilies) are fresh on the counter. Your mail is neatly stacked, the fridge is cleared of any expired items, and all your favorite foods are waiting for you.
The only thing you’d need to worry about when getting home? Giving some love to your pets and, maybe, unpacking—if you feel like it.
